Bromelain is a natural supplement that is not one substance, but a group of sulfur containing enzymes whose task is to digest proteins. The stem of the pineapple plant (Ananas comusus) is the source of this pain reliever in commercial products, although the fruit contains bromelain as well.

Indications and Dosing for Bromelain
Bromelain tablets are available in different grades, and
its potency is based on one two units of measure : milk clotting unit (mcu) or
gelatin digesting unit (gdu).
When treating pain and inflammation, bromelain always
should be taken between meals on an empty stomach. If taken with food, the
enzyme will act on the digestive process instead of the pain and inflammation.

Thrombophlebitis: For relief of pain, swelling and
tenderness, a course of 400 to 800mg daily, when taken as a complement to a
conventional analgesic, may provide additional relief.
Postoperative Pain: Take 500mg three times daily.
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Muscle Pain: Take 500 to 750mg
three times daily.
Gout: During an attack take 500mg every three hours, then
reduce to 500mg twice daily to help prevent additional attacks.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Take 100mg twice daily during an
acute attack. Reduce to 500mg twice daily when pain and inflammation subside.
Back Pain: Take 500mg three to four times daily.
General Dosing Instructions: If you have mild to moderate
pain or inflammation, take one 500mg tablet four times daily. For more severe
conditions, take 1500mg three times daily for several days, then reduce to
1000mg daily.
How safe is Bromelain
Bromelain causes no side effects for the majority of
people, even at dosages as high as 2 grams daily. Rare cases of nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea and rash have been reported. Among sensitive individuals, allergic
reactions are possible.
Do not take bromelain if you are pregnant, have a blood
clotting disorder, have ulcers or are taking blood thinning drugs.
