The homeopathic remedy bryonia (Bryonia alba) is derived from a perennial climbing vine that grows wild in southern Europe  in woods and vineyards and cultivated in the United States. Another species, Bryonica diocia, is used to make homeopathic remedy as well. Bryonia is also known as wild bryony, white bryony and wild hops.

The medicinal value of bryonia was known to the ancient Greeks, who used the root as a substance to induce vomiting. Accidental ingestion of the root can cause tissue inflammation, severe vomiting and violent diarrhea, all symptoms that the homeopathic version can ease. Unlike belladonna, bryonia is best used in conditions that develop slowly, such as rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic disorders.
